It tells the story At times, it was all I could do to hack through the jungle of adjectives and endless asides, desperately looking for a verb. Peake wrote at the same time as Orwell, but is more often compared I originally read them for the story, but I find myself going back to them to see how he achieves certain effects in his writing. Titus Groan contains the most vivid writing I have ever read. A series by Mervyn Peake made of the novels Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone and the lesser-known novella "Boy In Darkness", which take place sometime before the second book. If you like a fast paced story, I would advise against the series, as Titus Groan is frequently meandering and slow. I haven't looked at any of it for ages, but particularly remember (Page of manuscript from Titus Groan showing Fuschia and Steerpike; it seems Peake sketched his characters as he wrote; taken from the Gormenghast website which is stuffed full of information about Peake).
